2025 Oceania Cosmetics Regulation Updates (April)
1. Australia: Consultation on Draft Assessments for Industrial Chemicals
On April 2, 2025, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) invited public comment on 18 draft assessment statements. These statements provide safety information concerning the use, import, or manufacture of the relevant industrial chemicals. Stakeholders can submit feedback until May 29, 2025. Nine of the 18 published drafts are related to cosmetic uses.
AICIS is responsible for assessing the potential human health and environmental risks posed by the industrial chemicals manufactured, imported, or used in Australia. These evaluations constitute risk assessments for industrial chemicals being introduced or used, or for related matters. AICIS publishes the outcomes of these assessments as "evaluation statements."
2. Australia: Proposed Amendments to the Poisons Standard
On April 17, 2025, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) initiated public consultation on the proposed scheduling of 5 substances in the Poisons Standard. The public comment period ends on May 21, 2025. Feedback will be considered during the joint meeting of the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling (ACMS) and the Advisory Committee on Chemicals Scheduling (ACCS) in June 2025.
Substances scheduled for consideration at the joint ACMS-ACCS meeting include:
Azelaic acid
Extracts and essential oils primarily composed of methyl salicylate
