EU SCCS Releases Preliminary Opinion on Benzophenone-2 and Benzophenone-5
On April 22, 2025, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) released a preliminary opinion (SCCS/1679/25) on Benzophenone-2 and Benzophenone-5. The public consultation period will remain open until June 17, 2025.
Regarding Benzophenone-2, the SCCS could not conclude on its safety due to the inability to rule out concerns regarding potential genotoxicity.
For Benzophenone-5, the SCCS considers it safe when used as a UV filter in sunscreens, face creams, hand creams, lipsticks, sunscreen sprays, and pump sprays at a maximum concentration of 5%, either individually or in combination (based on the aggregate exposure from Benzophenone-4 as a reference).
